Magasin Café Owners Bring New Seafood Concept to Oak Street

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The owners of Magasin Café are excited to announce their latest seafood concept, Mukbang, slated to open this fall on Oak Street in the former Chiba restaurant space.

The owners of Magasin Café are still dedicated to bringing the flavors of their Vietnamese heritage to the New Orleans community, and after a successful decade in business, they want to offer a Vietnamese take on seafood preparation and presentation. “Mukbang” means “eating and broadcasting” and is a style popular in more Eastern parts of the world. The creators behind the Magasin brand wanted to expand the restaurant group’s offerings by adding an upscale seafood spot to their repertoire that offers the freshest seafood (local and from afar) with the most interesting flavors.

“Having operated Magasin Café & Magasin Kitchen for a number of years, we wanted to showcase what we can do with an elevated seafood concept with Mukbang Seafood,” said Kim Nguyen, owner, “so being based in New Orleans, what a great opportunity for us to show off some of the coast’s best seafood with our unique flavors and bring Viet-Cajun cuisine to the Riverbend.”

Mukbang’s menu will include all the local seafood you know and love (think shrimp, soft shell crab and crawfish) and some more unique options such as lobsters, clams, etc. Picture fresh seafood towers and oysters with an array of house-made sauces and view the latest catch of the day while seated along the seafood bar.

Mukbang will have a completely new beverage program as well fueled by a full bar and offering custom craft cocktails and wine and beer to pair with the seafood menu. The restaurant group is even hoping to offer some of its own retail items and bottling and packaging is in the works.

Taking over the restaurant at 8312 Oak Street, offers a great space for the team to work with – having 3,500 square feet and a large bar and kitchen area. “We are used to working in kitchens a third of the size, so this was so exciting for us to have so much room,” Nguyen said. “It opened up a lot of possibilities for us and we can even use the kitchen to prepare our catering services as well.”
