After working in the kitchen design business for five years, Monique Poché Bennett, a certified kitchen designer, opened Cabinets by Design in Gretna in 1988. Fifteen years later, the business moved to New Orleans. A building was purchased and renovated on Tchoupitoulas Street and now serves as its showroom.
Cabinets by Design offers services for the entire home or office, including designs for kitchens, butler pantries, wet bars, home offices, libraries, bathrooms and dressing areas. Designers generate floor plans and elevations to give the client an idea of the finished product. Cabinet brands used most often are Wood-Mode, Brookhaven, Ultra Craft and Mid-Continent.
In addition, Cabinets by Design also carries a wide variety of kitchen appliances, including, but not limited to, Sub-Zero, Wolf, Dacor, Thermador, Asko and U-line. Plumbing fixtures and an extensive selection of decorative hardware are also available. Countertop options and samples round out the design choices.
After Hurricane Katrina, the Cabinets by Design showroom suffered little damage and the business was able to reopen Oct. 3., 2005. The most difficult adjustment was “there were not enough hours in the day to help everyone as quickly as we would have liked,“ Bennett says.
“We offer as much help and advice as we can to guide our clients to make informed decisions,” Bennett says. “Customer service is, after all, the foundation of the company.”
With experienced designers offering their services—by appointment—a large variety of products, along with delivery and installation, Bennett says Cabinets by Design is “a full- service kitchen and bath design firm.” •
