Get ready to party this Carnival with The Chloe as it maintains its reign as THE Mardi Gras hot spot to “laissez les bons temps rouler.” In addition to offering daily wristbands that gives folks a place to hang, use the facilities, and grab a bite or drink, The Chloe will transform its front lounge into a decadent costuming hub. The Mardi Gras Market, which began with co-founders Lisa Reile and Susannah Lipsey just a few years ago with only 12 vendors, has quickly become a favorite among locals and tourists alike. And much of the market’s success can be attributed to Susannah Lipsey, retail buyer for The Celestine, The Chloe and Chloe Nashville. As the founder of Freda, a funky local boutique mixing art, jewelry and clothing, Lipsey has a seasoned eye for sourcing the latest must have pieces. Her thoughtful curation is undeniable throughout.
For this year’s market, now boasting over 30 vendors, Lipsey curated a killer-cool lineup of timeless yet of-the-moment accessories and clothing. She personally tracks downvendors, assuring the designs will mesh with the spirit of the store. As Lipsey puts it, “I reach out to everyone from costume makers to vintage dealers. There’s a place for everyone to discover something sparkly and fun in here.” Part of the magic of the shop is the unique perspective of each maker. Every piece goes far beyond basic celebratory expectations; costume wear, headpieces, epaulettes, festive collars, boas, vintage, glitter, festive accessories; it’s all here. And much like Mardi Gras itself, the creative, personal touches of each maker, beckon the spirit of pure joy and celebration.”
When asked for the best time to shop, Lipsey offered, “Well, the first weekend everything is fresh and new. But things are frequently replenished, so it’s hard to say! I also like the Monday or Tuesday between the two big Mardi Gras weekends. It’s a bit of a quieter time.”
