NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The Marigny Opera Ballet opens its 9th season with the joyful return of its full-length New Orleans Jazz Nutcracker on December 9. The ballet premiere in 2021 was performed to six sold-out audiences, becoming an instant audience favorite.
Choreographed by Jarina Carvalho, the Jazz Nutcracker is a delightful twist on the classic. Young Clara finds herself in Jackson Square, the heart of the French Quarter, on Christmas Eve, where she encounters typical characters: a fortune-teller, a family, celebrities, tourists and a drag queen, while on her way to the Kingdom of the Rain. The original score, based on the Tchaikovsky’s classic, is by jazz great Larry Sieberth, and will be performed live.
Performances at the Marigny Opera House will be December 9-11, and December 16-18, all at 7 p.m.

The season continues February 24 with a world premiere: A Streetcar Named Desire by Diogo De Lima, orchestral score by Tucker Fuller, and ends April 21-23 with two premieres by Jarina Carvalho and Lauren Guynes.
