Tyner time
Miss the soothing tones of John Coltrane from the 1960s? Fill the void with a concert by McCoy Tyner’s contemporary jazz trio Sept. 1. Tyner, who will be performing at the Contemporary Arts Center, is a noted pianist and composer and an original member of the John Coltrane Quartet. Louis’ party
Help celebrate Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong’s 104th birthday at the fifth annual Satchmo SummerFest. The four-day event, starting on Aug. 4, will feature lectures by jazz historians and plenty of concerts. The event takes place throughout the French Quarter. Information, 522-5730.
Altitude, baby
Sit back on plush sofas and enjoy a series of short films on plasma screens at Altitude 33, located on the top floor of the World Trade Center. The screenings will showcase local film-makers. Quiz Night
Test your knowledge of World War II on Aug. 26 and see if your team could be the ultimate historians. Get dirty
Royal Street art galleries offer a taste of the dirty side on Aug. 13. A decadent affair

Two’s Company
Mixed-media artist Chris Guarisco will showcase his new works at Robert Bruno Gallery in collaboration with “White Linen Night.” Many of Guarisco’s works are on display in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Historic New Orleans Collection. Exhibiting with Guarisco is his longtime friend, painter Cheryl Hayes. Hayes describes her style as “referential abstract.” A collaborative piece by the artists may be on display as well. Get a sneak peak at English and Continental ceramics that are “seldom seen” in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. “Seldom Seen” will showcase ceramics that are rarely seen by the public because of space limitations. The wide time frame of the ceramics ranges from 1560 to 1960, and the collection spans a variety of themes. Information, 488-2631.
Sweet at sugar
The Azucar Ball, one of the top fund-raisers of the local Hispanic community, will be held Aug. 27 at the Hotel InterContinental New Orleans. The 15th annual event will entertain under the theme “Sueños Caribeños” (“Caribbean Dreams”). Monies raised from the black-tie affair fund scholarships for outstanding Hispanic students.
