Places to go, people to see, things to do

Make the Connection
Photographs taken by different artists, at different times and in various countries – but which still have a unifying concept or subject – assume new meaning when viewed individually and with other photographs. The New Orleans Museum of Art’s exhibit “64 Degrees of Separation,” on display through June 26, begs viewers to see just that. Each photograph is placed with another, either preceding or following it, that is connected by theme or subject. Information, 488-2631.
You Say Tomato
Did you know Creole tomatoes can only be grown around New Orleans? Learn why at the 19th annual French Market Creole Tomato Festival on June 11. The event, which takes place at the French Market, will feature live entertainment, such as a gospel choir and brass bands, including one from Japan. Six of the area’s leading chefs will do cooking demonstrations with tomatoes. And, of course, plenty of farm-fresh tomatoes will be for sale. Information, 522-2621.
Take My Hand
Artist Nene Humphrey believes human hands are a metaphor for the way we leave our mark on the world. In her latest works, on display at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art through July, Humphrey uses a variety of media, including photography and sculpture. She uses common materials and transforms them into art to represent her ideas. Information, 539-9613.
Go Wild
Celebrate the Entergy IMAX Theatre’s 10th birthday with a safari … a 3-D safari, of course! “Wild Safari 3D,” showing through the summer, opens viewers’ eyes to the vast grasslands of South Africa. Try not to jump when lions roar or elephants come charging through the trees … it’s only a movie, right? Information, 565-3033.
The Call of the Beignet
In a town that loves to eat, beignets are often at the top of the list. On June 14, Richard Hennessey, owner of historic Morning Call Coffee Stand, will discuss the past, present and future of this delectable doughnut. Hennessey will also discuss the city’s rich and traditional coffee. The event, held at Longue Vue House and Gardens, is part of its “Tea on Tuesday” series. Information, 488-5488, Ext. 913.
Bloomsday
On June 16 in James Joyce’s celebrated novel Ulysses, character Leopold Bloom spends the day walking around Dublin and contemplating ordinary and everyday actions. Each year “Bloomsday” is celebrated all over the world by everyday people. New Orleans has its own “Bloomsday” tribute at O’Flaherty’s Pub. Celebrations include Irish music, a Joyce quiz and readings by notable authors. Information, 529-1317.
A Night of Jazz
Irvin Mayfield is known for his musical skills, but he also wears the hat of a fund-raiser. Mayfield’s second annual “Hot Jam” session will raise funds to benefit jazz-education programs, specifically the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and Dillard University’s Institute of Jazz Culture, on June 12 at Belladonna Day Spa. Partysist will provide food, and Charbay Vodka will host a martini bar. The Irvin Mayfield Sextet will entertain the crowd. Information, 891-4393.
Do you like SEAfood?
The 27th annual Seafood Festival in greater Mandeville will be held July 2-4. Sample fresh seafood dishes and listen to live entertainment, such as the Blue Meanies, the Boogie Men and Bag of Donuts. Don’t miss the fireworks display on the last night. A special children’s corner features rides and live performances. Information, (985) 684-9762.
A Southern Othello
One of two plays staged by the 12th annual Shakespeare Festival, held in Tulane University’s Lupin Theatre July 14 through July 30, the play is a tragic tale of love, distrust and murder. Information, 865-5105.
