May 2005

May 2005Junior Achievement of Greater New Orleans is making huge strides in educating our young people about how to be successful in business—and who more deserving to be on our cover than JA’s 2005 “Business Hall of Fame” honorees: Coleman Adler II, Henry Lambert, Carey Bond, Irma Thomas and Andre Rubenstein. (John Dane was unable to make the cover shoot.) Boysie Bollinger will be honored with JA’s Lifetime Achievement award. The “Business Hall of Fame” gala is May 12 at the Hotel InterContinental and starts with a chairman’s reception, then moves on to dinner and an awards ceremony. We appreciate these dynamos for being on the cover, but also for the hours they have put in to helping the city.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and once again we’ve found some great moms to profile: Ann Reynolds, Mary Hayden and Kathleen Waring. Their stories are amazing and you will wonder how they fit everything into their busy lives. We call them Supermoms! And for your own Supermom, the magazine is featuring great gifts in “What’s Hot,” so check it out.
There are two booksignings this month you don’t want to miss. First, Charles Carriere has written a thriller called Dupree’s Crude War that you won’t be able to put down. Charles is an incredible writer and lawyer, and he will be signing his book at Beaucoup Books on May 14 at noon. Put that in your calendar right now and show your support for Charles—we want him to keep writing! I have a booksigning for my new book, Seasonal Celebrations, at the Barnes & Noble on Veterans Boulevard on May 7 at 2 p.m. Hope to see you there so you can get an autographed copy! The book is full of great party ideas and recipes from famous New Orleans restaurants. Turn to “Hitting the Books” to find out more about both books.
I know the Bank One Zoo-To-Do is on everyone’s calendar (May 6), but I wanted to let you know that there is a new feature to the auction—you can bid on select items online. Go to www.zootodoauction.cmarket.com. Remember, proceeds benefit the Audubon Zoo.
Parties are heating up this month—especially with graduations—and Cadre Staffing can supply your fête with a well-groomed, experienced, trained and fully-insured staff. The company’s biggest client is the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, but it also staffs Benedict’s
on the Northshore and many more fine establishments. Cadre has bartenders, clean-up staff, dishwashers, servers and action station chefs who prepare pastas, omelettes, and carve beef … whatever you need them to do to make your party run smoothly. Call Steele Haile at 452-8324 or Edward Barcena at 458-6982.
Make your garden as pretty at night as it is during the day with special lighting from Stuart Services. Featuring an array of landscape lighting services—which include creative placement of hidden lights—the company’s trained professionals have nighttime demonstrations to show you shadowing, backlighting, pathways illuminated with copper frogs and more. Stuart also offers air conditioning installation and maintenance, and electrical services. Call 455-5555 (Southshore), 624-5555 (Northshore) and 651-5555 (River Regions) for more information.
I’m looking forward to a relaxing summer—and hope you have one as well! •
