NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Medium Rare restaurant, the “new kid on the block” on Magazine Street, right off Jefferson Avenue, is no stranger to immediately getting involved in the neighborhood. Proprietor Mark Bucher has made an impact in helping underserved communities and seniors in Washington, D.C. through his Medium Rare restaurants. Bucher and his team began distributing hundreds upon thousands of free meals and turkeys for Thanksgiving during the pandemic. A bounty of dinners and dollars later, he founded Feed the Fridge in 2021 – which has taken off in D.C. and is coming to New Orleans. Bucher’s non-profit is beginning to plant a seed in the Crescent City, one plate at a time, following a similar path of how it all began during Thanksgiving two years ago.
Bucher and the team will be providing meals at Medium Rare, Tuesday, Nov. 21, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., feeding homebound seniors at his steak-frites restaurant with volunteer help. Over 200 recipients from Flint Goodridge Apartments and St. Margaret’s Daughters Home will be welcomed to enjoy a seated, chef prepared Thanksgiving dinner.
“It is our hope that Feed the Fridge, New Orleans, will officially begin in January 2024. Everyone benefits – partner chefs and restaurants receive compensation for providing meals and we reduce hunger by offering easy access to meals in and around neighborhoods of New Orleans. This would be the first most important food city in the south and second city to join the organization,” says Bucher.
To date in the Washington, D.C. Metro area, there have been over 700,000 free meals served and participating restaurants and chefs have been paid more than $2,000,000.
