Musician Duke Heitger is the band director for the Steamboat Stompers. In 1998, Duke became the third band director for the popular group, following Eddie Bayard and earlier, Vic Tooker. All three men are well-known riverboat musicians. In this podcast, Duke recounts some of the history of Jazz on the Mississippi River and discusses an interesting misunderstanding many people have about Jazz musicians. He shares some fascinating insights about how Jazz differs in different locales, and explains how each area has its own unique interpretation of Jazz. Finally, Duke gives details about the 2014 "Steamboat Stomp" , a three-day music-filled event that will celebrate traditional New Orleans Jazz, Friday, November 14 through Sunday, November 16.
