NEW ORLEANS (press release) – San Francisco restaurant Sandy’s Muffulettas, owned and operated by New Orleans native Peterson Harter, is popping up at Turkey and the Wolf on Friday, Nov. 3, from 6 p.m. until sold out.
Sandy’s has become a San Francisco sensation since its inception in 2020. Sandy’s became a brick and mortar operation in the Height neighborhood in April of this year. Earlier this month, the San Francisco Chronicle identified Sandy’s Muffulettas as “one of the 25 Places to Eat right now.” Accolades have come from Eater and Edible SF; and The Infatuation recently named Sandy’s one of the top 15 sandwiches in the country.
Harter started Sandy’s, named after his father, during the pandemic with his partner Moni Frailing after both lost restaurant jobs. First selling muffalettas out of their ground floor apartment window, Sandy’s became a popular pop up in the Bay Area known for their not-so-classic muffulettas.
“There can be a lot of controversy around our sandwich,” said Harter. “We included some heat in our housemade olive salad, added Dukes mayo to the bread and heated it on a panini press. We also created a vegetarian option with roasted mushrooms, scallions and Cajun seasoning that’s so good, even I can’t decide which I like more.”
Harter’s roots in the New Orleans culinary scene go back to his mother, Lee Barnes, remembered for her namesake New Orleans cooking school. For over a decade, in the late ’70s and ’80s, Lee Barnes Cooking School featured popular classes and hosted guest chefs including Paul Prudhomme, Jacques Pepin and Leah Chase. Barnes died in 1992 leaving behind three sons. Peterson is her youngest.
“New Orleans will always be home in my heart,” said Harter. “To come back to the city where my culinary career began is something special. There is a community there like nowhere else in the country and I hope I can still be a part of it from afar.”
The menu will consist of Sandy’s classic meat muffuletta, roasted mushroom and scallion muffuletta, pickled egg salad, pimento cheese spread and their mouthwatering brown butter chocolate chip cookies. They will also have beverages ready to go.
