Fresh off a trip to visit family in Arizona, I am inspired anew by the stark contrasts between the region’s crackly, reddish-brown rocky landscape and the slick greens and swampy grays of New Orleans. Few cities could be more topographically and culturally different than Phoenix and New Orleans, yet I still find myself yearning to fold a bit of desert mountain magic back into our lives below sea level. Be it the blush pink cloud streaks that paint the sky before sunset or the century-old saguaro cactuses waving at us from the sides of the road, just like the deep south, the desert feels welcoming and beautiful in its own strange way.
Here are a few fun finds around town that might inspire you to escape to a desert landscape.
