NEW ORLEANS (press release) – New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) is proud to announce the groundbreaking of a new home for an LGBTQ+ family, aligning this significant event with Pride Month. This project underscores NOAHH’s unwavering commitment to fostering community diversity, equity, and inclusion.
In partnership with local organizations and volunteers, including our presenting sponsor, Entergy, NOAHH will construct a home for the Martin family, a dynamic and inspiring LGBTQ+ household in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood. This initiative is more than just a construction project; it is a powerful statement of support and recognition for the LGBTQ+ community in New Orleans.
“Building a Home, Building Inclusivity”
Marguerite Oestreicher, executive director of NOAHH, emphasizes the importance of this project: “Our mission is to responsibly build communities where families can thrive, in homes they can afford. By providing a safe and affordable home for the Martin family during Pride Month, we are also building a foundation of acceptance and inclusion. This project reflects our belief that everyone deserves a decent place to live regardless of their background or identity.”
Community Involvement and Support: The project has garnered widespread community support including a presenting sponsorship from Entergy. Volunteers from various local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, corporate partners, and individual supporters are coming together to contribute their time, resources, and skills. The collaboration aims to construct a home and create an environment of mutual respect and understanding.
The wall-raising event kicked off on June 21 at 9 a.m. at the construction site at 1527 Deslonde St. The event featured speeches from community leaders and wrap up in the afternoon with live music and refreshments.
