NEW ORLEANS (press release) – This holiday season, prepare for a fresh take on a beloved classic as the New Orleans Ballet Association (NOBA) presents The Nutcracker Suite on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall. This special one-hour performance transforms Tchaikovsky’s iconic holiday tale into an experience that will captivate every generation in the family. With all tickets priced at just $20, this event is both affordable and unforgettable.
This isn’t your typical Nutcracker. With over 100 performers ranging in age from 6 to 70+, NOBA’s unique intergenerational cast breathes new life into the beloved story. This magical tale is uniquely brought to life by participants from NOBA’s Center for Dance (CFD)—a renowned, award-winning program in partnership with NORD that has been inspiring the community for over three decades.
“This production is truly something special,” said NOBA Executive Director Jenny Hamilton. “It brings together dancers from all walks of life – young students and senior citizens alike – to share the stage and celebrate the joy of dance. It’s a heartwarming reminder of the power of community and the arts. We are incredibly grateful to Bank of America, Tulane University’s Department of Theatre and Dance, and NORD for their continued support in making this magical production possible.”
What sets NOBA’s Nutcracker apart is its deeply rooted connection to the New Orleans community. Throughout the year, NOBA provides tuition-free dance and wellness programming at up to 20 sites across the city, fostering a love for dance in students of all ages. Each community center involved in The Nutcracker Suite production prepares a specific role—whether it’s the mice, soldiers, or angels—with participants rehearsing all fall before coming together just a day before the big performance. This creative, collaborative process makes the production truly one-of-a-kind.
NOBA’s Pre-Professional Program students take on lead roles like the Sugarplum Fairy and Snow Queen, while the Senior Dance Fitness Program participants charm audiences with a special Grandparents dance in the opening scene. Not only is the experience free for all participants—there are no costume fees, further reflecting NOBA’s commitment to creating inclusive, accessible art for everyone.
The Center for Dance has long been a beacon for young talent in New Orleans, offering a clear pathway for students from early childhood through high school. With access to world-class instructors and performance opportunities with major international dance companies, NOBA’s tuition-free programs ensure that students, regardless of background, receive top-tier training.
This holiday season, don’t miss your chance to see a reimagined version of The Nutcracker that reflects the rich diversity and creativity of New Orleans. It’s more than just a show—it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and the next generation of performers.
