New Orleans-Based Black Photographers Lead Panel Discussion Spotlighting Black Cultural Storytelling in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The New Orleans Association of Black Journalists (NOABJ) will host a special in-depth photography panel discussion highlighting Black cultural storytelling in New Orleans from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at WYES-TV on May 14.

“Capturing the Culture: The Art of Storytelling through the Black Lens” features six well-known and respected New Orleans-based Black photographers with extensive experience capturing Black life, culture and art over the years.

This compelling and entertaining panel will help attendees gain an understanding of how to capture the beauty of the cultural elements of the city to tell a story of Black culture in New Orleans in a way that is not sensational but tasteful and respectful.

Our guest photography panel will give a masterclass on how to capture images that contribute to the culture in a positive way.

Photography panelists include:
● L. Kasimu Harris – New Orleans-based writer, photographer and artist
● Eric Waters – Photographer, Cultural Documentarian
● Dante Hendricks – Street & Documentary Photographer
● Larry Everage – Photographer, Videographer
● Christine “C Freedom” Brown – Photographer, Performing Artist
“With this event, the audience will get a glimpse into the minds of some of our cities’ brightest
visual storytellers; learning how do they approach one of the world’s greatest subjects, the Black
culture of New Orleans,” panelist and photographer Larry Everage said.

Big Chief Dow Edwards of the Timbuktu Warriors will also join the panel discussion. Edwards will help shed light on photographing Black Masking Indians. As we see those behind the lens change, Big Chief Dow will discuss how to work with the community to properly document this cultural legacy without being disrespectful to those who maintain the sacred tradition.

This event is free and open to the public. Guests must RSVP to attend via Eventbrite.

This event is sponsored by PJ’s Coffee on Read Blvd, WYES-TV and the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists. Coffee and pastries will be offered.
