New Orleans is the Best Place to Visit in October

It’s crazy to think we are at the close of September, it’s technically fall – though no one told our weather – and we are entering into what I believe is New Orleans’ prime time to shine. Football, festivals, food, fun and… the holidays!

Recently, New Orleans has made a few national lists for best places to travel next month and during the fall: with Halloween being a big draw. While no one does Halloween like New Orleans, there is so much more to do and put on your schedule, with October as the catapult, for a season full of activities.

My Favorite October Happenings

Oktoberfest

Do I particularly enjoy beer? No. But if you’ve ever been to Oktoberfest at Deutsches Haus you know that the vibe is the main draw to this multi-weekend event. Whether you come from German ancestry or just like the food, there’s something for everyone. My favorite things to watch: The Bräts and the beer stein holding competition.

Krewe of Boo

The Krewe of Boo parade is a huge fan favorite – maybe even over a few Carnival parades for some revelers. Kern Studios artists design 3-D paper mâché and fiberglass props that parade through the French Quarter at the end of each October. Plus, one of the best parts about attending this parade is that it’s free! Get your costumes on and head to the Quarter Oct. 24.

INKA

Peruvian food fits snugly amongst the cultural mosaic of New Orleans, making it the perfect home for the author-driven restaurant concept, INKA.

New Orleans Film Festival

The Big Easy is Oscar-worthy… well, in the sense that the New Orleans Film Festival is an Oscar-qualifying event that takes over the city this year from Oct. 22-27. Throughout that week, 100+ films will be shown in various theater locations around the city, with world premieres, documentaries and more. The stars will shine, so make sure you’re there!

Art for Arts Sake

I feel like this event is an understated moment among all of the October events, but it’s such a fun time on Magazine Street. It truly kicks off the art side of the fall season, Oct. 3, and you’re encouraged to sip wine and shop. It seems like a no-brainer, right? You get to shop along Magazine after hours while shops feature sales, wine, some live music, light bites and more. And… it’s FREE!
