NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) hosts its annual fall gala, which takes its theme from the blockbuster exhibition Fashioning America: Grit to Glamour. Starstruck: A Fashion Odyssey Presented by First Horizon raises funds to support the museum’s world-class exhibitions, innovative programming, and educational initiatives.
Highlights include:
- Live music from Rebirth Brass Band and Dr. Michael White Quartet, and a DJ set from Brice Nice
- Access to Fashioning America: Grit to Glamour, which features over 100 garments by American designers with an emphasis on the diversity of the United States’s fashion heritage. Designs on view include garments by Isabel Toledo, Christian Siriano, Lloyd “Kiva” New, Halston, and Ralph Lauren, as well as outfits worn by figures including First Lady Michelle Obama, Missy Elliott, and Rihanna. The exhibition also spotlights objects with a New Orleans connection, including designer Tyron “Marquette” Perrin’s glittery green suit and long cape donned by Big Freedia at the Miss Universe pageant and one of the oldest examples of a labeled garment in the country—a 19th-century metallic tasseled evening gown by Madame Olympe, who had a shop on Canal Street.
- Hand-drawn fashion illustrations by artist Rhonda Corley of attendees, who are requested to dress to dazzle.
- Event design by Urban Earth Studios inspired by Fashioning America: Grit to Glamour, including a red carpet and step-and-repeat with press opportunities for style/fashion coverage.
