NEW ORLEANS (press release) – A small group of New Orleanians are traveling to Cuba to bring hundreds of pounds of food to impoverished families that are dealing with the aftermath of two hurricanes and a catastrophic power grid failure.
“If anyone knows the devastation of a hurricane and food insecurity, it’s us,” said NOLA Loves CUBA Executive Director David Jackson in a release. “This should give us enough perspective to really help people in our sister city during such dire circumstances.”
The registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization has delivered almost 4,000 pounds of food to the township of Guanabacoa, Cuba in the past two years. The volunteers bring dry goods, non-perishable items, sanitary napkins and diapers to the island nation. The average Cuban income is $18 a month with parents giving their children the majority of food while they drink only water for subsistence.
Right now the organization needs to raise more money to send their volunteers to Cuba to help distribute the food. The nonprofit partners with churches and civic organizations that donate large quantities of food and supplies, but a rise in transportation costs are proving to be an issue this year.
