NOLA Gives

On Aug. 29, the 12-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the city of New Orleans sat and waited to see what Mother Nature was going to bring us. For anyone with their own Katrina story, it was a tough day. Because of that fight for survival 12 years ago, New Orleanians can relate to the struggle people in Houston and southwest Texas are experiencing as Hurricane Harvey and its fallout ravage the region.

This week, New Orleans business owners have leapt into action, announcing sales, discounts and collections to help our friends and neighbors in Texas. Though this is not a full list – and we encourage comments to let us know of other local businesses taking part – we wanted to create a space to highlight some of the bridal industry-related businesses on our radar raising money, collecting donations, offering discounts, holding benefits or selling items that benefit those affected by the disaster.

  • Fleurty Girl immediately put out a new T-shirt design based on our New Orleans slogan “Who Dat.” The “Hou Dat” shirt proceeds will go to Feeding Texas, an organization that helps fill food banks throughout affected areas, as well as to the Louisiana Cajun Navy, a group of Louisianians with boats, trucks and a lot of heart who head into flood-ravaged areas to help rescue humans and pets in need. Visit the Fleurty Girl website to preorder a shirt.

  • The ladies of Native Polish announced that proceeds from the sale of a grey, silver polish called “Love Y’all,” from now until Sept. 5, will go towards the Greater New Orleans Foundation and the mayor’s Pay It Forward Fund. You can find the polish here.

  • Designer Ellen Macomber, popular for her New Orleans mapped clothing and accessories, has designed a Texas baby blanket. Money raised from the sale of these baby blankets from not until Oct. 1, go to the Texas Diaper Bank. You can purchase the blanket online here or stop by Macomber’s St. Charles Avenue gallery.

  • Bonfolk socks has announced for every pair of socks purchased through next week they will donate two pairs of socks to Texas folks in need. Bonfolk’s mission is to ensure that socks, the least donated piece of clothing in shelters but arguably one of the most important pieces of clothing you need, are given to all those in need. Visit the Bonfolk website to get your pair of socks.

  • I Do Bridal Couture in Baton Rouge is collecting diapers, baby wipes and new baby items at the store. For every donation costumers receive 15 percent off any one accessory or the store will match the value of the item or items donated.  I Do is located at 4265 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge.

In addition, many restaurants around the city are doing their part, and the tourism industry as a whole to assist in the recovery effort in Texas. Several restaurants are collecting gift cards that will be sent to those in need in the Houston area. Eater.com compiled an excellent list that can be found here. There are even more details on this Facebook page.

On Sept. 2 Cure Nola is holding a Red Beans for Houston Red Cross event. “Please come out to eat Pableaux Johnson's peerless Red Beans and Rice while you sip great cocktails by us,” says Cure’s Facebook post. “Proceeds go to the Houston Red Cross. Big thanks to our volunteers and sponsors (Camellia Brand Beans, Sazerac Rye, Sipsmith Gin, Rougaroux Sugarshine Rum, and Makers Mark 46).”

As we said before, this is not a full list of locals helping out our neighbors in Texas. If you know of another business collecting items or giving a percentage off, let us know in the comments and we will add them to the list.

We know how it feels to have our whole world flipped upside down. This is an opportunity for New Orleanians  to help a city in peril and the generous people who took us in when all hope was lost.
