The National World War II Museum held the 2008 Stone Energy Victory Ball June 7, in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion under the Torpedo and Tumbleweed planes. Co-chairs were John and Sylvia Laborde and Cappy and Darlene Bisso.

Always a fabulous event and the museum’s largest fundraiser of the year, the ball’s theme was “Thanks for the Memories,” in appreciation of the entertainers of World War II who created some joy in a time of struggle. Museum expansion is a reason to toast, as the Stage Door Canteen, homage to the lively clubs, will open in Summer 2009 along with the 4-D Victory Theatre. The Stage Door Canteen will be a venue for fine dining and cocktails as well as varied presentations and live performances.

Red, gold and bold was the décor for the annual black-tie celebration. Delectable dishes were created by Palate Catering. “The One and Only Tommy Dorsey Orchestra” played ditties from the 1940s. The crowd enjoyed the Swing Sisters – three singers performing in the style of the Andrews Sisters, dressed head-to-toe. A very special guest was Carl Reiner – World War II veteran, actor, and writer. He reflected on his experiences as a soldier and as a duo with Mel Brooks.

At the National World War II Museum events, veterans are asked to rise as attendees thank them for their devotion to our country. At this year’s Ball, the applause was powerfully long lasting.
