Every now and then, the party gods align and deliver an effortlessly perfect event, but more often, it’s thoughtful planning and a few unexpected touches that make a celebration truly memorable. When I throw a party, whether it’s for five friends or a hundred guests, I like to add a bit of novelty, a playful element to delight even the most reluctant of attendees. And let’s be real, I do it to entertain myself, too. It’s my party, after all. Over the years, I’ve hired break dancers, burlesque dancers and a sing-along band of performers called the Natural Light All Stars. I’ve rented a poker table, a jukebox and sought out a custom ice luge by John Albrecht. I even tried to track down Michael Winslow, the amazing actor/voice performer from the “Police Academy” movies. It turns out he IS available, just not on my budget.
As we enter peak holiday party season, even the most ambitious hosts can use a little inspiration. So, I checked in with Susan Zackin, of Z Event Co and Sparkle & Swag, to hear what’s trending in the party-sphere. Susan says, “People love an interactive dining experience. For example, an at home Omakase dinner is a big hit.” If you are not familiar, Omakase is a multi-course Japanese style meal dictated by chef selections. They can really turn up the drama with food choices and presentation; think ridiculously fresh seafood and smoking dry ice. Another go-to of hers? A craft cocktail bartender, especially one who can work the room and customize drinks on the spot. And with more people opting out of alcohol lately, Susan says there’s been a noticeable rise in mocktail bars: “a lot of guests just don’t want to drink right now.”
I’ve still got plenty of quirky ideas brewing that may never come to pass but nonetheless they stay on my wish list. I’m pining for an a cappella performance by Nola Vox, a karaoke party set up by Para Karaoke, a Sorella’s Hat Bar, a Glambot photo op and floral decor by Marais Paper. But since there are only so many days in a year, I may have to choose just one.
