The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra held their first “The Big Beat” fundraiser on Thursday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at the JW Marriott. The event featured an 18-piece big band with artistic director Irvin Mayfield and special guest Cyril Neville, with a presentation by legendary percussionist Bill Summers and a showcase featuring iconic New Orleans drummers Adonis Rose, Shannon Powell and Jason Marsalis.
JW Marriott executive chef Chuck Subra presented a special menu crafted especially for the occasion. Gold, Platinum and Table sponsors were invited to join Irvin Mayfield, NOJO musicians, NOJO executive leadership and special guests for a VIP pre-party with hors d’oeuvres and a champagne toast at 6 p.m.
The NOJO is a performing arts organization whose goal is to strengthen the business of jazz through performances, touring, recordings, educational and media platforms. The NOJO, founded in 2002 by Irvin Mayfield, is the first and only performing arts institution committed solely to the development of an industry for Jazz. All process from “The Big Beat” directly support NOJO.
