The only thing better than a simple bowl of assorted olives is the salty crunch of olive salad slathered on top of the greasy goodness of a muffuletta … or maybe the spicy vodka-and-tomato-infused olives mixed in with the ice at the bottom of your Bloody Mary glass.
But olives are more than just a cocktail garnish or a dinner party nosh; they are referenced in literature, mythology and the Bible and Quran as symbols of wisdom, purity and rebirth. New Orleans may not be known for its wisdom –– and certainly not for its purity –– but rebirth is happening here at a rapid pace, especially with spring upon us.
So as the weather warms, pick up a pint of olives at your local olive bar or just raise a martini or two to help usher in New Orleans’ most enchanting season. F
