PJ Morton Releases a Christmas Album and Spends Thanksgiving at the House of Blues
Earlier in the year I talked with PJ Morton about his excellent release – Gumbo. Tomorrow he’ll return with the new record Christmas with PJ Morton – his first holiday record. Morton has a seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of soul and R&B and he has brought these powers to bear on this set of classic holiday tunes. If you’re looking to get into the spirit early without driving your friends and family crazy, this is a great compromise. When I last spoke with Morton, I asked him about where he sees himself in relation to his music and what he is able to convey. He said, “I can be much more eloquent in a song than just being myself. But ultimately I try to make sure that the music is honest.” If this isn’t a prefect formula for the holidays, I don’t know what is. Check out “All I Want For Christmas Is You” below. Also you can catch up with Morton when he drops by the House of Blues for a special show the day after Thanksgiving (Nov. 23).
Larkin Poe at One Eyed Jacks
While we are on the subject of bands in town with new records. Tomorrow night you can catch the southern-harmony sister duo of Larkin Poe at One Eyed Jacks. I had the pleasure of catching this group at Bonnaroo this summer and they were one of the highlights of the festival. What really shines here is the harmonic resonance between sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell. Their new record – Venom and Faith – is released Friday as well so you can expect a celebration of their excellent new music. Check out the standout track “Honey Honey” below.
