Podcast: Celebration in the Oaks Celebrates 27 Years of Fun

Julie LaCour

Julie LaCour is the director of special events for New Orleans City Park. The park's annual holiday display, Celebration in the Oaks, is one of its most popular events. This year, 2013, marks the 27th time New Orleans City Park has put on Celebration in the Oaks. The exhibits are all handmade, and park staff work for eight months on the many colorful, sparkling displays. According to LaCour, "We've got Mr. Bingle's Arabian Knights, where you'll see Mr. Bingle on a magic flying carpet." Another exhibit Julie is particularly excited about is Sealabration, which features handcrafted sea creatures adorned with stones and, of course, numerous lights. The famous "Who Dat Tree,” which has become something of a local icon, will also be on display. The distinctive New Orleans-themed tree has appeared on “Sunday Night Football,” ESPN and “SportsCenter.” In this holiday podcast, LaCour gives us some insight about what goes into creating this beautiful annual New Orleans holiday tradition.
