Preservation Hall Foundation Announces 2024 Legacy Awards Ceremony Inductees

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The Preservation Hall Foundation announced its annual Legacy Awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday Oct. 16. This special event will honor the exceptional contributions of pianist Mari Watanabe and early Hall employee and renowned civil rights activist Dodie Smith-Simmons, who have dedicated over 100 years collectively to preserving and promoting the rich musical heritage of Preservation Hall. Additionally, the ceremony will pay tribute to the legendary Sweet Emma Barrett posthumously, recognizing her significant impact on New Orleans jazz.

Since its establishment in 2015, the Legacy Program has served as a vital initiative to celebrate the invaluable contributions of culture bearers within the Preservation Hall musical community. This year’s ceremony underscores the Foundation’s commitment to honoring three women whose passion and dedication continue to shape the cultural landscape of New Orleans.

Join us as we celebrate Mari Watanabe and Dodie Smith-Simmons for their remarkable dedication and lifelong contributions to the jazz heritage of New Orleans. We will also honor Sweet Emma Barrett’s legacy, whose influence continues to inspire generations of musicians.
