NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Join the Preservation Hall Foundation as we induct Lawrence Cotton, Rickie Monie, Tom Sancton, and Clive Wilson into our Legacy Program and award our 2019 Sousafund beneficiaries. The Preservation Hall All-Star Band will provide the music for the evening while Ben Jaffe will present awards. The event is free and open to the public.
The Legacy Award confers a monthly honorarium and induction into our Legacy Program, started in 2015, which provides support to our elder musicians and has already distributed $150,000 in direct financial support to musicians as they reach their later years. A core pillar of the Preservation Hall Foundation is honoring and supporting the elder musicians of our 50+ member collective.
The Sousafund, which grants music students basses and sousaphones to use in school music programs, was created to ensure New Orleans jazz and brass band culture will be made meaningful to the present. The program, launched in March 2018 after Ben Jaffe, son of Preservation Hall founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, had his sousaphone stolen.
