NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Three mid-century modern homes in Lakewood South will be open to the public as the Preservation Resource Center (PRC) hosts its 2025 MidMod Home Tour and Happy Hour from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18.
“When people think of unique New Orleans homes, they usually think of the Garden District or St. Charles Avenue,” said Danielle Del Sol, the PRC’s executive director, in a release about the tour. “But there are many significant modernist homes here that are worthy of celebration.”
PRC shares that two of the homes on the tour were designed by famed New Orleans architect Albert Ledner, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. One was his personal home, which was designed as two stars connected by a foyer.
The third home was designed by architect T. Sellers Meric as his personal residence. The house, made up of two-story “pods,” was recognized with the American Institute of Architects’ Honor Award in 1970.
The featured homes on this year’s tour are located at 5328 Bellaire Dr., 5460 Bellaire Dr. and 5570 Jacquelyn Ct. All are within walking distance of each other in Lakewood South, which was developed in the 1960s after the Lakewood Country Club was displaced due to the construction of Interstate 10 and Interstate 610.
“All of the homes in the neighborhood were badly damaged after Hurricane Katrina,” said Del Sol. “While some of the mid-century modern homes in the area have been replaced with new construction, the owners of many properties realized the architectural value and salvaged them. They are all impressive pieces of New Orleans’ recent past that have become just as important as some of the oldest structures here.”
Tickets for the PRC’s MidMod Home Tour and Happy Hour are on sale now and can be purchased at prcno.org/events or at any home on the tour. You may visit the homes in any order.
Proceeds support the PRC’s mission of protecting New Orleans’ historic architecture and neighborhoods.
