NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The Press Club of New Orleans is pleased to announce that it will fund two $2,500 scholarships again this year for students from the New Orleans metro area that are pursuing careers in journalism or communications.

The scholarships are open to students who graduated high school in the greater New Orleans area and are attending either in-state or out-of-state colleges. The scholarships, underwritten in part by proceeds from annual Press Club fundraisers, will be awarded to rising sophomore, junior or senior college-level students enrolled in public relations or print or broadcast journalism programs. This year, one of the scholarships is named the Jim Monaghan Memorial Press Club Scholarship, in memory of late founder of Molly’s at the Market. Molly’s has served as a gathering spot for the Press Club for decades and currently hosts monthly media happy hour events with guest media celebrity bartenders where funds for one of the two scholarships are raised through tips.

“One of our organization’s primary missions is to support future journalism and public relations professionals by providing these scholarships each year, and we are so happy that we are able to offer them again in 2020 during this difficult time,” said Press Club of New Orleans President Melanie Spencer. “This year is even more special because we will honor a great friend of the Press Club, Jim Monaghan. Jim always supported our events and mission, and it’s fitting that one of our scholarships is named after him.”

The deadline to apply for a Press Club scholarship is Friday, June 19, at 5 p.m. Applicants must complete the scholarship application, in addition to providing an outline of their course of study, career goals and financial need, and include their cumulative GPA and work samples.
