REMEMBER DES ALLEMANDS

I enjoyed the article in your Autumn issue on the German influence in Louisiana. But I was surprised that the community of Des Allemands was not even mentioned. Des Allemands, French for “the Germans,” was formed when German settlers from Taft moved south from the Mississippi River through the swamp and “Lac Des Allemands” to settle along Bayou Des Allemands to fish, trap and hunt.
Names like Allemand, Colonge, Fickey, Tregle, Hockemn (now Hackman), Schaubhut, Wenger, Zeringue, just to name a few, are still located in this community.
