Retailer Spotlight: Penny Francis

Retailer Spotlight: Penny FrancisEclectic Home is a store that sells a stylish selection of furniture, accessories, lamps, lighting and gifts. Owner and decorator Penny Francis says she reaches a diverse clientele—many who go to the store in search of a signature piece to enhance a room, or come in because they need help with an entire home. Eclectic Home also has two design consultants on staff to assist customers. This month, the store offers 20 percent off select lighting.

How did you get started?
I dreamed of owning a store since I was a little girl, and have always been passionate about decorative arts and furnishings.

How is your design philosophy reflected in the store?
I believe good design looks like it has evolved over time and that it’s okay to combine furnishings of different periods and styles in the same space. That’s what I try to convey in my store. The store is truly “eclectic”—or as one customer put it, “eye candy.”

What goals do you have as a retailer?
I want to provide unique merchandise and excellent customer service in an environment that is inspirational. If we don’t have it, we will find it. There are hundreds of suppliers we buy from and sometimes we can’t represent them all in the store—therefore, we research and provide clients with information about the items that meet their criteria.

What are some trends in home décor and design that you’ve noticed?
Clean, not cluttered spaces. Animal prints such as zebra stripes or Dalmatian spots can enliven the tamest of rooms. Also, classic furnishings with modern finishes,
like a black lacquered Bombay chest. Blue and white are making a comeback in both traditional and modern environments.
