Rooting for the BEST

Just the thought of the experience is as unpleasant as the sound of a drill. Going to the dentist is hardly a top experience, but when do go we can at least hope for a top rated dentist. We present here our annual Top Dentists list as prepared by topDentists of Augusta, Ga.

This list is excerpted from the 2012 topDentists™ list, a database that includes listings for more than 145 dentists in eight specialties in the New Orleans area. The list was based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dentists and professionals by their peers.

The complete database is available at usatopdentists.com. For more information, call (706) 364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; email info@usatopdentists.com or visit usatopdentists.com.

Selection Process (as explained by topDentists:)

“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the top dentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and, of course, physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association (ada.org), as well as all dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists who we have missed that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot with whose work they are familiar. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies (Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Periodontology, etc.) can play a factor in our decision.

Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.

Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Rooting for the BEST

Saving a fractured tooth

At a young age Dr. Elizabeth Riggs loved creating things with her hands whether the tools she used were paint or crayons. These days Riggs uses different types of tools to create beautiful smile designs. She says that her profession is both “fascinating and rewarding,” and it allows her to integrate her own artistic vision in creating beautiful and healthy smile designs.

“I was born to be a dentist,” Riggs says. She also acknowledges that while growing up in West Virginia her neighbor, who was also a dentist, inspired her to pursue the profession.

Riggs began working as a dental assistant 29 years ago. She says she began pursuing dentistry because she fell in love with the entire process of smile design. After graduating from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, Riggs began a full-time private practice and returned to LSU School of Dentistry as a part-time faculty member in cosmetic dentistry. Her office is located in a historic Victorian cottage in a quaint Uptown neighborhood on Magazine Street, which offers an extensive variety of general and cosmetic dentistry.

Her passion for the practice is evidenced by not only in her patients’ smiles but also in her work ethic. “If I could, I’d work eight days a week,” Riggs quips.

One of her toughest patient cases involved restoring an entire set of teeth. The patient lost all of his or her teeth and desperately wanted a natural, aesthetic smile.

“Creating a pleasing and functional smile can be difficult after a patient has experienced years of wear, destruction of teeth, compounded with loss of bone and support,” Riggs explains. “You really have to be astute to the causes of these [dental] problems as well as the many possible ways to resolve them and prevent them from reoccurring.”

Another interesting case would test Riggs’ skills and expertise. In 2006 a former patient of Riggs, who relocated to Atlanta after Hurricane Katrina, contacted her to help her son. He fractured his front tooth below the bone, and dentists there told him he was going to lose his tooth. The mother and son traveled to New Orleans so Riggs could treat him properly.

“Through modern-day dentistry and state-of-the art technique, I was able to save the tooth for years, allowing the patient to complete orthodontics,” Riggs explains. “He would have lost the tooth and possibly would have had to wear a removable partial denture.”

Fast forward to present day and the patient is now old enough for Riggs to place an implant where the fractured root was, and no one will be the wiser.

“… Tough cases like these cannot be fixed overnight,” she says.

Riggs says that as technology enhances our daily lives, it also continues to advance the science of dentistry, and it’s important to stay at the forefront with the continual advancement of techniques.

Her advice to young dentists is to “follow your dreams, do not cut corners and never sacrifice quality for quantity,” and she advises “we all better serve our patients and prosper from continued growth and learning.”

When she isn’t working, Riggs says she enjoys listening to music, visiting art galleries and thinking of ways better ways to create more beautiful smiles.

Rooting for the BEST

Patients with a genetic susceptibility

While pursuing a degree from Southeastern Louisiana University, Dr. Kristi Soileau wowed the judges at the 1978 Miss Louisiana Pageant by winning the coveted Congeniality Award. With both brains and beauty, Soileau went on to attend Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, specializing in periodontics. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, and in the placement of dental implants. They are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation.

Soileau won over the judges not only with her smile, but also with her easygoing, friendly personality. It is no wonder, then, that her patients feel at home under her care.

“I think the hardest part of the day is having to cut short conversations that are truly engaging, but in the interest of staying on schedule [I] have to break away from patients,” Soileau says.

One of the most pleasurable things Soileau says she enjoys is performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. This includes lengthening small teeth in individuals with gummy smiles or, conversely, recovering roots that have been exposed and are now too long.

“No two people are alike, and no two cases are exactly the same,” Soileau says. “It’s important to realize that behind that tooth or that quadrant being treated is a person with a life story that can impact your day as much as you are intervening in theirs.”

Some of Soileau’s toughest patient cases involve treating patients with genetic susceptibility to periodontitis. Even with aggressive and ongoing therapy, patients can go through unpredictable downhill spirals. Soileau says that, although it’s a rarity, periodontitis can be seen in people as young as teenagers.

In cases like these, where surgical therapy doesn’t result in the outcome desired, the patient is sometimes asked to have preventive cleanings as often as every month. Also smoking, alcohol consumption and diabetic issues must be kept at bay in order to give the dentition a fighting chance.

According to Soileau some patients who have dental insurance unfortunately have low annual allowed maximums, some not much more than they were in the 1970s, and thus a large number of people are unable to complete treatment plans they may need, causing them to spread their treatment out over a period of years. “It is quite disheartening for the dentist and patients alike,” she says.

When she isn’t working, Soileau enjoys spending time with her husband, Dr. David DeGenova, an orthodontist who practices in Metairie, and their three sons. She has appeared on local television stations, traveled around the world giving lectures and presentations and enjoys being a loving wife and mother while continuing to give back to her community. She has taught Catechism at St. Francis Xavier since 1996 and is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, editor for the New Orleans Dental Association (since ’89), member of the Ladies Leukemia League of New Orleans since ’86 and more.

“Each day brings new challenges, adventures and joys,” Soileau says. Her advice to young dentists is to “enjoy their careers by taking care to continually nourish their minds, bodies and faiths, and to nurture the communities in which they live.”
