Royal Engagement

When Prince William married Kate Middleton on April 29, 2011, the world was watching – some even setting twilight hour alarms to ensure they didn’t miss a moment. For some, royal weddings are an obsession and have been for decades.

So it’s no surprise a frenzy broke out early this morning when Prince Charles, announced the engagement of his son, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle.

The American actress and the prince have been together for about 16 months and only recently officially announced they were a couple. It is reported that earlier this month is when the prince “popped the question” in what Markle described as a romantic proposal.

A detail many were speculating on was about the engagement ring. Prince William famously gifted Kate Middleton the engagement ring his mother wore, and it was speculated Harry would follow down the same path.

The BBC, which has a one-on-one interview scheduled with the couple later today, reported that the three diamonds in the ring, designed by Harry with the Queen’s official jewelers, all had significant meaning. The main, cushion cut center diamond is from Botswana, a country the couple has frequented often and a favorite of the prince, while the two side stones are from his mother’s collection, which was passed down to him and his brother after her tragic death.

The two side stones appear to be rounder and it has been reported that they have a yellow shank, but nothing official has been said.

Between the start of fall and the beginning of the new year, this time of year is a common period for couples to get engaged, and this new royal couple is following suit.

For those looking to propose this holiday season, take a que out of Prince Harry’s book and add a little something royal to the ring’s look.

Local jewelers like Aucoin Hart and Boudreaux’s Jewelers have an extensive collection of rings, and many options that mimic the classic, simple setting of the soon-to-be royal.

This three-stone radiant cut from Jack Sutton has the same simplicity and elegance as Markle’s but in a different cut. On the same note, Ramsey’s Diamond Jeweler’s Thousand Points of Light ring offers the same feel with a cut mimicking more of what Prince Harry designed.

And Boudreaux’s Jewelers takes the idea of the side stones, but instead has them going around the band with the cushion cut diamond as the spotlight.

If you’re looking to take a note from the older royal’s engagement ring playbook, Friend & Co Fine Jewelers offers a cushion cut sapphire ring surrounded in sparkling round diamonds, which holds a likeness to Kate Middleton’s, formerly Princess Diana’s, engagement ring.
