Satchmo SummerFest Celebrates 25th Anniversary in August

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) announced the 25th anniversary of Satchmo SummerFest presented by New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund (NOTCF). This milestone celebration of New Orleans’ most beloved musical icon, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, will take place August 2–3 at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Since its founding in 2001 to commemorate the centennial of Armstrong’s birth, organizers say the festival has grown into a cherished summer tradition celebrating the enduring impact of Satchmo’s life, legacy, and unmistakable sound.

This silver anniversary edition of the festival will feature two full days of music across multiple stages, thought-provoking conversations with Satchmo scholars, and a flavorful culinary lineup, with everything free and open to the public, thanks to continued support from sponsors and community partners like New Orleans & Company.

“As we mark 25 years, this milestone is more than a celebration—it’s a heartfelt homage to Louis Armstrong, his musical legacy, and the traditions and community that have gathered year after year to honor him,” said Emily Madero, president & CEO of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. “This year’s lineup not only pays tribute to Armstrong’s timeless influence but also celebrates the artists who carry his spirit forward.

Festivalgoers can expect a rich mix of traditional jazz, brass and marching bands, funk, R&B, and jazz fusion, all performed by the city’s most beloved artists and rising talent. Two outdoor tented stages—the Fidelity Bank Stage and the Delta Utilities Stage—will feature a dynamic blend of fan favorites and exciting new acts.

Shamarr Allen will return to Satchmo SummerFest for the first time since 2017, and his set will feature a guest appearance by Cyril Neville. The Gallatin Street Records Piano Sessions, sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz Museum, also return by popular demand, offering intimate indoor sets that blend musical mastery with the Museum’s current exhibits. This year’s sessions also include Ricky Riccardi, an acclaimed Armstrong biographer and now a two-time Grammy winner. Riccardi will make a rare appearance on piano, joined by legendary trumpeter Wendell Brunious.

Whether dancing outdoors or listening indoors, attendees can expect a soundtrack as bold, joyful, and unforgettable as Satchmo himself.

Gates are open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and the public is invited to enjoy this celebratory weekend, including Saturday’s Satchmo Sound-Off with The Roots of Music and Sunday’s Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church, followed by the annual Satchmo Salute Parade through the Tremé and French Quarter.

As part of the 25th anniversary celebration, Satchmo SummerFest organizers share they are expanding the festival’s commitment to guest wellness and accessibility. New this year is the “Keeping You Well” initiative, a partnership with LCMC Health that enhances on-site medical and wellness services. Licensed healthcare professionals will be stationed throughout the festival grounds to provide first aid, distribute free sunscreen, and share wellness resources to help guests stay safe and comfortable throughout the weekend.

“Our partnership with Satchmo SummerFest aligns perfectly with our mission to support community wellbeing,” said Greg Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health. “By offering strategically placed first aid stations and free sunscreen, we’re ensuring everyone can fully enjoy the celebration.”

Festival cuisine will once again reflect the city’s rich and diverse culinary traditions. Eight vendors will serve a variety of local favorites. Returning offerings include 14 Parishes’ Caribbean dishes, Café Dauphine’s soul food, Mrs. Wheat’s Pies’ meat pies, Plum St. Snoballs’ icy treats, and Southerns’ fried chicken. New to the lineup are In a Bowl, offering smoothie-based delights, and Lillie’s Cajun Kitchen, featuring Louisiana classics like crawfish étouffée, collard greens, and fried fish.

New Orleans’ hot summers won’t be a problem for Satchmo SummerFest attendees, thanks to Chill at the Fest powered by Entergy New Orleans. This year features more misting fans and free neck chillers return to keep everyone cool. Guests can also enjoy the museum’s air-conditioned halls filled with exhibits and history on the second and third floors. The Gallatin Street Records Piano Sessions sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz Museum on the second floor will feature performances from some of the city’s finest piano players, including Victor Campbell and Lilli Lewis.

Adding to the indoor experience, the New Orleans Jazz Museum will launch a new exhibition in partnership with French Quarter Festivals Inc., the nonprofit organization behind the festival’s production. The retrospective exhibit will open on July 31, celebrating and honoring the 25th anniversary of the Satchmo SummerFest. Curated by David Kunian, “Brother, Can You Spare A Quarter: Satchmo SummerFest Turns 25” features the commemorative posters since the start of the festival. The artists in the exhibit include Jane Brewster, Tami Curtis-Ellis, Margaret Slade Kelley, Ayo Scott, Marinta Skupin, Scott Hodgin, Koby Sackey, Mario Padilla, Richard Thomas, Philip Bascle, and many others. These framed art pieces will be displayed on the walls of the world-famous New Orleans Jazz Museum throughout the festival weekend and beyond.

Attendees will be able to view the exhibition as they make their way to the 3rd floor, where the Satchmo Legacy Stage in Memory of Joni Berry is located. The stage offers ten insightful presentations by Satchmo scholars and historians from noon to 5:00 PM each day. These presentations offer enriching insights into Armstrong’s life and times, as well as those inspired by him.

For a sensory break in a cool and quiet area, Benny’s Sensory Activation Vehicle, courtesy of the Beignet Fest Foundation, makes events more inclusive for individuals with sensory processing sensitivities often associated with autism and other conditions. The fully equipped tow-along trailer provides a safe space for decompression, offering a pause from the sights and sounds of the day’s events.
