NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Second Harvest Food Bank needs volunteers to help produce more than 2,800 daily meals to deliver to seniors and school children in its Reily Foods Kitchen (700 Edwards Ave., 70123). Second Harvest prepares, packages, and delivers up to 1,500 meals to 58 school feeding sites and 1,300 meals for seniors in partnership with Councils on Aging. In addition to the meals, approximately 1,900 snacks are prepared and packaged for children participating in after-school programs.
Volunteers help produce and plate nutritious meals and snacks that are then delivered to children and seniors throughout the New Orleans area. No experience is necessary and volunteer training is provided for all tasks volunteers may be asked to tackle.
The Second Harvest Reily Foods Kitchen needs volunteers Monday through Friday during the following shifts:
First Shift
6 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.
Second Shift
8 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Third Shift
9:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Fourth Shift
10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
“The most significant need for volunteers is the daily 6 a.m. shift,” said LaShondra Glover, community outreach supervisor. “Mornings are a critical time in our community kitchen. We are seeking volunteers who are excited to start their day in a truly meaningful way – sharing their time and talent before heading to the office or settling into the routine of a typical weekday.”
Each year, Second Harvest Food Bank welcomes thousands of volunteers who generously give their time sorting food donations, packing donation boxes, distributing food boxes at community food distributions, and plating and packaging meals in the Second Harvest community kitchens.
“It would not be possible for Second Harvest to distribute 36 million meals annually without the commitment of volunteers who are the equivalent of 26 additional full-time staff members,” said Natalie Jayroe, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank. “Their efforts are heroic, and we are grateful for their gifts of time and talent,” added Jayroe.
