NEW ORLEANS (press release) – This Sunday, July 16, at 2 p.m., join producer Molly Fowler and panelists for a discussion about Angola, incarceration in Louisiana, and the intersection of arts and mass incarceration.
Serving Life is the first OWN original documentary and is executive produced by Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker. The film takes viewers inside Louisiana’s maximum security prison at Angola, where the average sentence is more than 90 years. The prisoners within its walls are known as the worst of the worst – rapists, kidnappers and murderers. With prison sentences so long, 85 percent will never again live in the outside world. Instead, they will grow old and die in Angola. Serving Life documents an extraordinary hospice program where hardened criminals care for their dying fellow inmates. In doing so, they embark on a journey that may end in personal rehabilitation.

Preceding Serving Life, we will be sharing a trailer of Tosha Smith’s series Unheard Voices, followed by a brief discussion. Unheard Voices is a series that asks “Where are the parents?” from the persepctive of a mother of an incarcerated son.
The screening and panel discussion to follow will be held in the Black Box Theater. Admission is free for all Louisiana residents every Sunday, courtesy of The Helis Foundation’s Art for All initiative. Gallery tickets may be reserved in advance or at the door.
