Nearly 270 guests attended the Southern Dominican Gala, which was held at the Wyndham Canal Place Hotel on Nov. 2. The night started with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and partygoers also bid on silent auction items.
At 8 p.m., a gourmet dinner was served in the ballroom amongst the beautifully decorated tables, accented with orchids donated by Maximillian Mipro. Dr. John Jordan, president of the organization’s New Orleans Advisory Board, welcomed attendees and introduced Fr. Martin Gleeson, who in turn introduced five novices and other Dominican friars that were present that evening. The 2007 St. Martin de Porres award, named for the Southern Dominican friars’ patron saint, went to Leah Chase and Richard Colton Jr. While the Dominican order has been in existence for hundreds of years, this province was formed in 1979. The friars chose St. Martin de Porres as their patron because his life was one of serving the poor, and bridging the divisions between races, cultures and classes.
Chairing the event were Townsend Jordan, Betsy Laborde and Penny O’Krepki, while Mrs. Eric Wedig served as the silent auction chair. Guests were also entertained by the music of the Herb Tassin Band.
Proceeds will support the Southern Dominican Friars of St. Martin de Porres Province’s many ministries, the formation and education of Dominican novices and students, as well as take care of the elderly friars.
