Sipping through Spring & Summer

It’s that time of year when bars start rolling out their springtime menus despite the chilly, then warm days we’ve been having lately. Never fear. The sun is always shining on the spirit world and bartenders all over the city are creating amazing drinks to quench our thirst.

The bar manager at MOPHO (514 City Park Ave.), Amber Dawn Peterson says, “we are so excited to rollout our seasonal cocktail menu to match our food offerings.” Peterson is in the process of revamping the cocktail selections, including the addition of the alcoholic Boba Tea.

What’s that you may ask? By definition, its a sweet drink that combines milk, flavored tea and tapioca pearls that are sucked up through an extra large straw and chewed. The boba drink pearls have a soft, chewy consistency similar to that of gummy candy. Its a frozen fruit beverage that sounds perfect on a warm New Orleans day.

Add to that, MOPHO is also partnering with Makers Mark, Peterson says, to get rid of plastic straws and replace them with paper products. You can expect this eco-friendly change within the next few weeks. This summer Peterson is featuring a Boba Tea Mint Julep. She says it’s a must see and sip. Might be a good idea to check out the new cocktail menu launching next week.

If it’s beer you love, it would be a good idea to check out Urban South Brewery (1645 Tchoupitoulas St.). Marketing rep, Abby Perkins says, “We live in New Orleans and we love seasonal selections. We are always brewing something special.” Look out for the Lime Cucumber Gose, which Perkins says pairs well with gin. Gose (pronounced Goes-uh) is a German-style sour beer that is tart, fruity and refreshing. The primary ingredients are wheat, barley, coriander and salt. An added twist, Perkins says, “is to get a six pack and pour in your favorite gin over ice.”

This brewery has limited selections of fun, funky beer on tap and if you're not drinking, one option is the lemongrass fizzy water. Urban South is celebrating its two year anniversary.

Sac-A-Lait (1051 Annunciation St.) has a seasonal menu that will satisfy the best imbiber. We found the “Gettin’ Figgy Wit It" among the drinks on the cocktail list. It’s infused buffalo trace, pimms, pickled figs, rosemary and ginger beer. Here you can relax and sip in a great atmosphere.

Sac-a-lait is set in an old Cotton Mill in the Warehouse District of New Orleans, originally constructed in 1882. The chefs and their families designed and built the entire restaurant, including all of the wood and ironwork.

Summer is about to hit New Orleans and we know you’ll be searching for a good cocktail. There are plenty of opportunities to drink at a host of bars, distilleries and restaurants with full bars, breweries, tiki spots to the most sophisticated places.

Any where you go, bartenders are conjuring up some seasonal delights.

Enjoy it and if you have a great place with a cocktail that stirs your soul, let us know so we can share it with everyone.
