Southern Decadence, Huey P. Long's Birthday and More Things To Do This Weekend

Thursday, Aug. 29-Monday, Sept. 2
Summer ends with a bang with the annual Labor Day weekend event Southern Decadence. The nonstop LGBT party includes concerts, dancing, contents, a big parade on Sunday, and a “hung over and broke party” on Monday to close things out. Info here. Friday, Aug. 30:
The Roosevelt Hotel celebrates the 120th birthday of Huey P. Long, a frequent guest of the hotel, with a performance of The Kingfish starring Spud McConnell. Info here.

The Honey Island Swamp Band plays Tipitina’s for its Foundation Free Fridays series. Colin Lake opens. Info here.

On Friday and Saturday the Prytania screens the midnight movie standard The Rocky Horror Picture Show with a live “shadowcast” that pantomimes the action in front of the screen, leads audience participation call-backs and puts Rocky Horror “virgins” through some gentle hazing. Info here.

 

Saturday, Aug. 31:
Keep the party going on this long weekend with the Krewe of OAK’s annual Mid-Summer Mardi Gras, an off-season Carnival walking parade and massive Uptown bar crawl. This year’s theme is “OAKtopussy Riot: A Tribute to James Bondage,” and you will be sorely out of place if you choose not to don some sort of costume. Info here.
