Spring weather in New Orleans is magical with its fluctuating temperatures. Some days demand flowy, gauzy fabrics with frequent facial spritzes of water while others require a light sweater coupled with obligatory comments about how chilly it is. It all seems so civilized before June rolls around. There are options. Unlike summer, when the only temperature is CRAZY HOT, the spring temperature vacillations allow for more style options. One can get away with white, pink and floral shirt dresses typically associated with summer, and in the same week, opt for a long-sleeved Tee and light wash jeans. To prepare for all of these forthcoming choices I headed to Peony boutique on Magazine Street. Peony is a warmly romantic, beautifully whitewashed shop that always has the thing you never knew you needed. Boasting several coveted European brands, not carried by other local boutiques, you can always find something unique.
When I popped in, the whimsical, bold patterns in primary colors immediately stood out. Most of the culottes and day dresses by Frances Valentine and Tara Jarmon conjure up images of a Capote swan jaunting off to Palm Beach. The pieces confidently put to rest the 80’s and 90’s silhouettes that have inundated us over the last few seasons. Also, unavoidable in the shop was the poplin. The racks were swimming in a sea of crisp, soft cotton. Tops and dresses by Beatrice and Psophia were standouts. Both brands deliver modern, clean cut cotton designs, still elegant in their breeziness. And of course, flowy maxi dresses from brands like Antik Batik and Mersea are still en vogue and aplenty at Peony. Hopefully these cuts will never go out of style. So comfortable, so forgiving.
