I was hanging out with my gal pals recently when one of them suggested sourcing a caricature of our group. We all giddily agreed that a cute drawing to attach to our group chat would make us giggle and was worth exploring. I figured the most artistic among us would sketch something cute, albeit amateur over the next few weeks and that would be that. When our friend came back within 30 minutes with a dead-on caricature of our group, I was incredibly impressed. But then, she casually dropped the fact that it was made by ChatGPT and my jaw hit the floor. Huh? How?
If you aren’t AI savvy this sounds like some Herculean feat but for those in know, it’s mere child’s play. This discovery gave me a pit in my stomach. I felt unsettled in the worst way. I had to ask myself why? I’ve had no problem using a calculator to solve complex math problems or to spell check an article. What is, technically, the difference? I became sure that it came down to the notion that it was a creative pursuit. It felt unfair, impersonal, and soulless. Art without an artist. And what could be sadder than that?
This brings me to another recent observation. At a party last week, I looked around at all the lovely, well-dressed people and noticed something. Every single woman was wearing some iteration of the ubiquitous chunky gold ball or hoop earring. Don’t get me wrong, I love classic pieces, but this particular look felt repetitive and uninspired. With the rise of AI and its potential infringement on our individuality, it felt imperative to wear something unique – to don clothing and accessories conjured in the real world, by real people. Perhaps this can manifest as something as simple as an earring choice. Nothing crazy, a simple color, shape or length nuance to make your look special. To help with this existential creative crisis, I’ve compiled a fun group of jewels that, although unique, are also practical enough to wear to a myriad of events. Because I’m determined to maintain both my self-expression and practicality.
