Tucked inside the back of it’s brightly-colored sister restaurant, Tacos del Cartel, is the new sushi fusion concept no one can stop talking about. Sushi By Us is a more intimate and exclusive take on the dining experience from the Veho Hospitality Group, whose portfolio spans across southeast Louisiana and West Palm Beach, Florida.
The limited-seating speakeasy-style restaurant is a hidden oasis among the concrete jungle of the Central Business District, which offers guests an opportunity to indulge in classic Japanese technique and cuisine with the flare of the Big Easy and the quality of service and hospitality we’ve come to know through the restaurant group’s other concepts.
On April 1, Danny Cruz, Vilexys Cruz and their whole team officially welcomed everyone to celebrate their new sushi experience with a ribbon cutting outside of the restaurant along O’Keefe Avenue. The event was attended by local city and business leaders who recognize Veho Hospitality Group’s commitment to the continued economic growth of the downtown community.
“We are investing. We are committing,” said owner Danny Cruz in his remarks during the ribbon cutting. “And we are betting big on becoming one of the leading hospitality groups right here in Downtown New Orleans.”

Other attendees and speakers included Mayra Pineda, president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Jenny Mains, deputy mayor of Economic Development; Seth Knudsen, president of the Downtown Development District; and City Council Member Lesli Harris.
A main point of focus for the new restaurant was the man at the helm of creating and curating the Sushi By Us brand, which has made New Orleans its official home.
Chef Johan Pereira is an industry veteran with over 15 years of experience at internationally-acclaimed restaurants – including Salvaje, which has achieved global recognition. Throughout the event, Pereira and his team gave guests a taste of the restaurant’s menu with highlights like the Tuna Tiraditos and Teriyaki Lamb, while spotlighting the fresh ingredients and attention to detail included in the sashimi and nigiri offerings.
“Sushi By Us is designed to be a full sensory experience,” said Pereira. “While the space is very intimate and exclusive, the quality of our hospitality and our gastronomy is carefully crafted with excellence.”
While Veho Hospitality Group is known for it’s vibrant and expressive take on cuisine, the opening marks a more quiet and sultry side to their restaurants that focus on the sensory experience as your transported far beyond Downtown New Orleans.
