Conspicuous consumption never played so well than at Saks Fifth Avenue’s “Key to the Cure” kick-off gala and shopping weekend. The kick-off party on Oct. 14 drew a large crowd that filled Saks’ three floors, where partygoers could find food and libations, as well as entertainment from Ya Ya Soul, Don Vappie and the Creole Jazz Serenaders, the George French Band and Women in Jazz, and circus performers. There was, of course, lots of shopping going on, especially since two percent of the sales that night though Oct. 17 benefit the cancer research programs of Tulane Cancer Center and Louisiana State University Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center, which combined are known as the Louisiana Cancer Research Consortium. More than $100,000 was raised by this event, of which Mercedes Benz and Saks were the primary underwriters.
