Thanksgiving Week In Music

Thanksgiving week is usually an interesting one for music.  It always starts with a packed weekend and then slowly settles into the relative quiet of the holiday.  This week we have a couple of great fundraisers at Tipitina’s as well as some really interesting collections of local musicians playing together.  There is plenty to do and see.

Tonight, DJ Soul Sister hosts her dance party at One Eyed Jacks.  Also tonight, you can catch a great lineup at Tipitina’s for the 4th Annual Harvest the Music benefit for Second Harvest Food Bank.  This show features Honey Island Swamp Band, Brass-A-Holics, Bo Dollis, Jr. & The Wild Magnolias and Miss Mojo – there is a VIP option that includes balcony access as well as dinner and drinks.  This party will be a fun way to roll into the holiday week.  At BJ’s Lounge tonight you can catch Gal Holiday and the Honkey Tonk Review while the Pinettes Breass Band are at Bullet’s Sports Bar.  Tomorrow night, Sphongle is at The Joy Theater with Goopsteppa and Kalya Scintilla while the Stooges Brass Band play Tipitina’s with Watson’s Theory Trio.  Also tomorrow, you can catch the Congo Square Drummers at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center while the Joe Krown Trio plays Dos Jefes and Corey Henry’s Treme Funktet is at the Maple Leaf.

Sunday, Blues legend Robert Finley will be at One Eyed Jacks while the Hot 8 Brass Band takes their usual stand at The Howlin’ Wolf and the Pfister Sisters play the Carnaval Lounge.  Also Sunday, you can catch the Meschiya Lake Trio at Chickie Wah Wah or Amine Bouccetta, Michelle Welchons and Simon Moushabeck together at the SideBar.  Monday, Aurora Nealand and the Royal Roses are at The Maison while the George Porter Trio with Terrence Houston  and Mike Lemmler play the Maple Leaf.  Tuesday, Incubus is at The Fillmore with Le Butcherettes while Mikal Cronin is at One Eyed Jacks and Gryffin is at The Joy.  The big show Tuesday is The 1975 at the Lakefront Arena.  Tuesday also boasts a great double header at d.b.a. with Dinosaurchestra in the early spot and The Treme Brass Band pulling the late shift.

Wednesday, Tipitina’s has an all-star powerhouse musical tribute to Dr. John with Musical Director George Porter, Jr. accompanied by Herlin Riley, John “Papa” Gros, John Fohl, Renard Poche, Tony Dagradi, Brad Walker, Tracy Griffin, Theresa Andersson & Jolynda “Kiki” Chapman and featuring performances by Ivan Neville, Jon Cleary, Deacon John, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Anders Osborne, James Andrews, Johnny Sansone, Stanton Moore, David Barard, Eric Struthers, Robert Dabon.  If that weren’t enough the tribute will also feature solo performances by Tom McDermott, Kyle Roussel, Josh Paxton and Oscar Rossignoli.  This show should roll well into Thanksgiving morning and is going to be one for the ages so make sure you’re there.  Also Wednesday, Subtronics plays a DJ set at The Joy and The Tin Men play d.b.a.

If you’re looking to sneak away from the family on Thanksgiving night, roll over to The Maple Leaf for a set from The Trio with Johnny Vidacovich.  You can also catch sets from The Preservation Legacy Band and The Preservation All Stars at Preservation Hall or Mike Dillon and Helen Gillet at the SideBar (this will be a great show as well).
