The Academy Awards on the Big Screen at Prytania Theatre

For many of us, the Academy Awards is our Super Bowl. It is a yearly excuse to bring friends together, bet on your Oscar Ballot, and put together punny finger foods like ‘Oppen-Mayer Weiners’ or ‘Poor Wings’. One’s specific interest may vary; some watch for the red-carpet outfit serves, others to witness the canonization of cinematic titans (Cillian V. Giamatti), but everyone watches for Ryan Gosling’s live “I’m Just Ken” performance. It’s a prom for film folks, and everyone’s invited!

What we can all agree upon, however, is the best way to enjoy The 96th Academy Awards is the same way movies are best experienced: with a crowd on the biggest screen possible. Thankfully for us, the biggest Oscar party in Hollywood South is smack in the middle of Uptown.

This Sunday, The Prytania Theatre Foundation Presents The 96th Academy Awards Watch Party, a glamorous night for film fans of all ages to get dolled up in their finest festive attire (encouraged but not required) and toast the collective power of cinema in New Orleans’ oldest operating movie palace.

“We have been doing the Academy Award watch party for 20+ years at the Prytania,” said Paige Brunet, director of operations for Prytania Theatres New Orleans. “We love doing this party to celebrate films, film-making, and our industry.”

This year’s party, hosted Sunday, March 10, with doors opening at 5 p.m., is set to be the grandest yet, featuring live entertainment from Tony Bentley, Heidi & Phil Melancon & The Genial Orleanians, and a cavalcade of musical guests to join in the fun. At $30 a ticket, this all-inclusive experience includes complimentary beer, wine, and bites (perhaps ‘Barbie-Q Shrimp’?). You won’t find a better time in Uptown this Sunday night.

“The party is a great way to make watching the Oscars a communal experience, just like movies are,” said Brunet. “This is a fun night that celebrates community and art, two things the Prytania is founded on.”

So, if you don’t already have a party, or like this writer, don’t have cable, and are looking for the best spot to celebrate an incredible year at the movies with a crowd of well-dressed, properly liquored, and rowdy cinema lovers, come down to The Prytania Theatre on Sunday, March 10, for good food, better times, and magical memories on the big silver screen.
