The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl

This Saturday, Mother’s Day weekend will have an '80s theme throughout downtown as attendees of The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl try cocktails and brunch items from local bars and restaurants.

The crawl, whose name references the popular John Hughes film about high school archetypes enduring Saturday detention, will begin at new eatery, Central Pizza & Bar. Once there, each mom will receive complimentary rose’ and a complimentary rose with registration to the brunch crawl.

Social Entertainment Productions Event Coordinator Britlyn Delahoussaye said the idea behind the event was to highlight downtown businesses. This year, participating bars and restaurants include Central, The Jefferson St. Pub, The Greenroom and The Wurst Biergarten, where DJ RV will play ‘80s music. Attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly.

Joby Chachere of Chachere’s Plate Lunch, located on Lee Avenue, will provide the brunch item from Greenroom. Delahoussaye said all brunch items and cocktails are specialized for this event.

The event last year was a sight. I saw women in neon tights and crimped hair take over downtown, on a Sunday morning, while their children watched in amusement/horror. Last year, participating businesses included Reve Coffee Roasters, Tsunami and Legends.

Social Entertainment Productions also conducts popular pub crawls, and the atmosphere and structure of The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl will be similar to past events.

“Whether at night or during the morning, there is a certain energy of the crawl participants, which creates a vibrancy to the stops and downtown,”Delahoussaye. “The brunch crawl, however, is slightly more relaxed than that of our nighttime crawls.”

Delahoussaye said last year’s event garnered more than 150 people.

When I witnessed The Breakfast Club Brunch Crawl last year, I wasn’t sure if it was their earnestness, or their children’s combined mortification and the admission that Mom’s word-for-word memorization of “Africa” by Toto was impressive, but I was endeared to what the event brought out in the dynamics of parents and their older children. It was surreal and delightful to see my friends’ mothers in our frequent hangouts, and it was a fun way to see the parents of my friends in a new light.

The event commences at 10 a.m. at Central, where participants will register and mingle until 11 a.m. From there, the crawl moves to The Greenroom and then Jefferson Street Pub for 45-minute increments, then onto the Wurst Biergarten for the official afterparty at 12:40 p.m.
