Margaret Sche, owner of Saint Claude Social Club is busy. In addition to condensing her former stand-alone shop into the Columns Hotel gift/coffee shop, she is also launching a new retail concept. The Closet by Saint Claude Social Club (also at the Columns Hotel) will offer curated, standout pieces for rent with a New Orleans flair. The idea came to her after closing down her shop last year. Initially driven by practicality, the concept began to resonate for sustainability reasons as well. She thought, instead of owning those WOW pieces that are hard to financially justify, why not rent for a few days and then give them a new life? Our closets would be less jammed, and we’d be no less fashionable for it.
The Closet will feature bold pieces for Mardi Gras but also perennial statement attire for the fashionably brave. Hand selected by Margaret, the inventory will seamlessly balance the line between costume and high fashion and come padded with styling advice. The clothing and accessories will rent for anywhere between $40 to $500 and will rotate according to season and special events. Mardi Gras themed garments will have a quicker 3-day turnaround, but most other items offer flexible return dates. She realizes the concept is new for New Orleans and that there will be a learning curve, but her hope is to make The Closet a special experience; combining creativity, style and fun. She envisions everything from locals seeking styling help to tourists searching for something fabulous to wear to a wedding. The possibilities are vast and she is open to it all!
Mardi Gras rentals start this Thursday. The grand opening party will be held on Jan. 29 from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at The Columns. 3811 Saint Charles Ave.
