As a child I would often play “house” with my older sister. She always assigned me as the parent; thus, I had the privilege (her words) of cleaning up her room and making her a snack. My favorite part of this game, aside from my sister agreeing to play with me, was “work time.” I would wander over to my mother’s desk and pretend to do very important parent things. There were papers to sort, pushpins to stick and stamps to press. I’d create a world in which I transformed life’s chaos into a beautiful, neatly organized tableau.
I am now a mother of two and get to play “house” in real life. And while not quite as entertaining as I imagined it would be, it has its perks. For example, I now have a desk appointed with stylish accessories to help me seamlessly tackle adult tasks. But what I missed in the fine print was that my peaceful spot to get things done would become a veritable storage unit for children’s backpacks, random toys and books I’ve never read. This is partially my own fault but also just the reality of adult life. I still hold out hope that one day my desk will be worthy of the one from my childhood fantasies. In the meantime, I’ll dream of a less crowded workspace covered in useful but beautiful things.
