How does your creative process at The French Mix Interiors help allow for seamless, effective collaboration with clients?
Interior design is an art form rooted in creativity and style, but there is so much more to the practice than merely aesthetics. After nearly two decades in the business, I can say with confidence that our interiors aren’t just beautiful; they are unique, deeply personal, and reflective of each client’s style and lifestyle. We never approach two projects the same way, so no two projects look alike! We recognize that some of our clients are design enthusiasts who enjoy the collaborative process and choose to be actively engage and we appreciate that others prefer a true “concierge style” experience that only a full-service studio like ours can offer. Either way, the end result is always an elevated, authentic design that is impeccably executed from inception to installation.
Could you explain the name “The French Mix” and how it describes the unique services that you offer?
Throughout history, France has been home to some of the world’s most celebrated creatives, including artists, architects, fashion designers, and chefs. French interior designers and furniture designers have also been undeniably influential. Our work is greatly inspired by them and their ability to create beauty that is innovative yet timeless. That’s where the “Mix” comes in. It refers to the various periods, provenances, and styles that we incorporate into our design work and source throughout the country and Europe for our Old Covington shop. Design clients and retail customers alike can feel confident that if it’s part of our mix, it’s been scrutinized and selected for quality and soul.
When approaching a new home or space, what are the first steps to finding the vision for the design to come?
There is a common misconception that “the look” drives “the feeling” when, in fact, it’s the other way around! Before I start scheming, I always ask my client to describe the feeling they want their room to evoke or the function they want it to serve. For example, do they want a bedroom that is calming at night or energizing in the morning? Do they dream of a dining room that sets the scene for formal, candlelit dinner parties or casual Sunday brunches? High design is emotion-driven.
Are there any recent projects that you are particularly proud of?
That’s a difficult question because I take great pride in all the projects I’ve completed and all the relationships that I’ve forged while doing them!
That said, I am probably most proud of my biggest projects. In this instance, the word “biggest” refers to the scope or complexity of these projects—not their budget or square footage. As a full-service design studio, we routinely handle every little detail and, every so often, those tiny details present big challenges. This is especially true when there have been construction obstacles to overcome, one-of-a-kind furnishings to design and fabricate, and daunting timelines.
