The Garden District Book Shop Hosts Reception For “Can’t Be Faded: Twenty Years in the New Orleans Brass Game”

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – The Garden District Book Shop will host an evening honoring the release of “Can’t Be Faded: Twenty Years in the New Orleans Brass Band Game” by co-authors Stooges Brass Band and Kyle DeCoste on July 15 at the historic Rink (2727 Prytania St.).

“Can’t Be Faded,” published by University Press of Mississippi, is a collaboration between musician and ethnomusicologist DeCoste and more than a dozen members of Stooges Brass Band, past and present. It is the culmination of five years of interviews, research, and writing. Told with humor and candor, “Can’t Be Faded” is as much a personal account of the members’ careers as it is a story of the city’s musicians. Even more generally, it is a coming-of-age tale about Black men in the United States at the turn of the twenty-first century.

“We’re thrilled that The Garden District Book Shop will be hosting us for a belated in-person celebration of “Can’t Be Faded”’s publication,” shared DeCoste. “This is the first book authored by a brass band and it’s going to feel wonderful to gather with Stooges Brass Band members past and present to celebrate the book’s entrance into the world.”

The event will begin at 6:00 PM with a welcome reception featuring snacks and beverages provided by The Garden District Book Shop. DeCoste and bandleader Walter Ramsey will then share insights from the book where they will take guests through the barrooms, practice rooms, studios, tour vans and streets where the music was made. The discussion will be followed by a brief Q&A and an exclusive performance from the Stooges Brass Band. After the performance, co-authors DeCoste and members of the Stooges Brass Band (Andrew Baham, Walter Ramsey and Virgil Tiller) will be available to sign and personalize books.

Individual tickets are available for $33 and include a copy of the book and welcome reception snacks and beverages. Couples tickets are also available for $43 and include entry for two, one copy of the book and welcome reception snacks and beverages. Tickets can be purchased at Eventbrite.

All state-mandated COVID safety protocols will be in place.
