The NOLA Project Partners with New Orleans African American Museum for Latest Roaming Production

NEW ORLEANS (press release) –  The NOLA Project theatre company is taking its talents to the Tremé. The New Orleans African American Museum (NOAAM) will be the site for The NOLA Project’s latest roaming production when George C. Wolfe’s THE COLORED MUSEUM debuts on Feb. 22.

Originally premiering in 1986, THE COLORED MUSEUM is a bold satire featuring a series of “exhibits” representing Black American culture. Described by Wolfe as both “an exorcism and a party,” THE COLORED MUSEUM has electrified, discomforted, and delighted audiences of all colors redefining our ideas of what it means to be Black in contemporary America.

“This nearly 40-year-old play not only serves as a mirror reflecting on the entirety of the Black experience in America but also pays homage to the titans who shaped the identity of Black America,” said directors Torey Hayward and Tenaj Wallace. “George C. Wolfe’s masterful blend of searing comedy and provocative themes makes this production both a specific exploration of Black Americans and a universal commentary on the shared threads of humanity.”

The NOLA Project’s own Hayward and Wallace direct a cast featuring ensemble members Pamela D. Roberts and Matthew Thompson along with Jordan Bordenave, Rahim Glaspy, Aria Jackson, April Louise, DC Paul, Riga Ruby and Lawrence J. Weber Jr.

THE COLORED MUSEUM marks the first co-production between The NOLA Project and NOAAM. The historic setting is the perfect venue for Wolfe’s historic script.

“NOAAM is located in the Tremé section of New Orleans, a neighborhood that was home to the nation’s largest, most prosperous and politically progressive community of Black people by the mid-1850s,” said NOAAM Creative Producer Cameron-Mitchell Ware. “NOAAM is a nexus for inspiration, learning and connection, serving our neighborhood, our city and visitors from around the world with immersive exhibitions and public programs that weave together historical analyses and contemporary reflections about how the peoples of the African Diaspora contributed to and continue to shape the culture of New Orleans and America.”

THE COLORED MUSEUM will be presented in and around 1417-1418 Governor Nicholls St. There is no seating for the 75 minute-long immersive event – chairs for patrons will be accommodated upon request. Please note the production contains some adult content. For detailed schedule, tickets and more, visit NOLAProject.com.

THE COLORED MUSEUM is made possible by The Carol Sutton Memorial Grant, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, and New Orleans Recreation and Culture Fund.
